David was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on August 15, 1960. He attended the North Carolina State University in Raleigh and graduated magna cum laude in 1982. He then attended the Law School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 1985 and was admitted to the North Carolina State Bar in that year.

David is licensed to practice before all North Carolina State Courts, the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the North Carolina Bar Association, the North Carolina State Bar, the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, and the Lenoir County Bar Association. He is past President of the Lenoir County Bar Association and the Eighth Judicial District Bar Association.

David's practice is concentrated in litigation with an emphasis on criminal, domestic, and personal injury law.
