JOHN ROBERT HOOTEN

John Robert Hooten was born in Lenoir County, North
Carolina, on June 10, 1935. He graduated from
The University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957 with a B. S. Degree
in Business Administration. Thereafter, he served honorably
in the United States Marine Corps and attained the rank of
Captain. He received his J. D. Degree from
Wake Forest
University School of Law in 1963 and is licensed to practice
in North Carolina.
John is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, The
North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, The North Carolina
Bar Association, The American Bar Association, and the
Lenoir County Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in
all courts of North Carolina, all Federal District Courts in
North Carolina, the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit,
and the United States Supreme Court. He was a Law Clerk for
U. S. District Court Judge John Larkins and is a former
Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of
North Carolina.
John has been very active in civic and community affairs
in Lenoir County, North Carolina. He was a member of the
Kinston City Board of Education from November, 1969, until
December, 1981, and was Chairman of the Board of Education
for nine years. During the period of time he served on the
Board, extensive changes were brought about in academics and
the physical facilities of the system, including the
building of a comprehensive high school. Because of his
efforts to obtain the comprehensive high school and
participation in other civic affairs, Mr. Hooten was awarded
the "Citizen of the Year" award in 1976 by the
Kinston/Lenoir County Chamber of Commerce.
John's practice is concentrated in
litigation with an
emphasis on personal injury law. He is certified by the N.
C. Dispute Resolution Commission as a Superior Court and
Family and Divorce Mediator.
