Now in its 9th year, the magazine's Legal Elite lawyers are chosen by their peers—more than 19,000 ballots are sent to lawyers all across the state. About three percent of the state's attorneys are chosen as the best practitioners, according to magazine officials.

Neither Bircher nor Johnsey is a stranger to professional accolades. Bircher was named with the same honor last year and Johnsey has received numerous awards including Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers, North Carolina. Bircher practices in White & Allen's New Bern office and Johnsey practices in the Kinston office.

Bircher received his undergraduate degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in criminal justice in 1992 and his law degree from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University in 1997.

While Bircher's practice is concentrated in the area of bankruptcy, his other areas of emphasis include civil collections litigation and foreclosure.

Johnsey has handled tax, probate, and estate and business planning matters in Eastern North Carolina for more than 30 years. He is a board certified specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law and a Fellow in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Johnsey is a member of the Southeastern Trust School Faculty at Campbell University.
